Reptile surveys

All six of the UK’s native species of reptile, three snakes (adder, grass snake and smooth snake) and three lizards (slow worm, common lizards and sand lizard) are protected by UK legislation, with the two rarer species (smooth snake and sand lizard) additionally being granted European protected species status.

Helix Ecology can undertake presence/absence surveys, detailed surveys to estimate distribution and population, and monitoring. Reptile surveys include visual observations, including searching suitable vegetation and under natural or existing refugia, and use of artificial refugia. We follow best practice guidelines when undertaking surveys.

Reptile surveys are best carried out at certain times of year, so forward planning can help reduce costs and prevent delays further down the line. Download our ecological survey calendar for more information.
