Hazel or common dormouse surveys

Dormice are fully protected in England and Wales under UK and EU legislation. They are found in a wide variety of habitats, not only deciduous woodland. Any development reasonably likely to impact on dormice (damaging habitat, or disturbing or killing animals) should be preceded by a survey.

Survey methods include looking for gnawed hazelnuts, looking for nests, and/or setting out nest tubes or nest boxes.

Dormice are European protected Species, and developments that will impact on this species must be carried out under the appropriate license.

Timely surveys can help reduce costs and prevent delays. Download our ecological survey calendar for more information.

Have a stiff neck from counting 642 soprano pipistrelles out of one roost - 45 minutes of squabbling before they were all out! (The 100+ common pipistrelles using the other end of the building seem to have moved on.) Biggest pip roost I have personally encounted in Somerset.
