Ecological surveys

Helix Ecology undertake habitat surveys and surveys of protected and priority species. We advise on protected species legislation, timing of works, and impact avoidance, mitigation & compensation. We help with protected species licensing, and provide ecological clerk of works services during construction.

Habitat surveys:

  • Phase 1 surveys

  • Hedgerow surveys
  • Building surveys for bats/nesting birds and other protected species
  • Tree surveys for bats (potential roost features)

Protected species surveys:

  • Amphibians, including great crested newt
  • Badger

  • Birds, including barn owl

  • Hazel dormouse
  • Otter
  • Reptile (adder, common lizard, grass snake, slow worm)
  • Water vole
  • White-clawed crayfish

Have a stiff neck from counting 642 soprano pipistrelles out of one roost - 45 minutes of squabbling before they were all out! (The 100+ common pipistrelles using the other end of the building seem to have moved on.) Biggest pip roost I have personally encounted in Somerset.
